Diyas

Diyas, deeps, deepas, vilakku...as they are called in differentIndian languages carry a lot of significance in Hinduism. They come in many forms and shapes and are also made from many materials- brass, silver, clay lamps, candles, even artificial lights. Clay lamps are my most favourite- they give you a lot of scope for painting and decorating them.

I had decided on painting some diyas and putting them on sale during dussera for this diwali. Dusserah is one festival during which a lot of people visit home and thought it would be the best time to sell the painted diyas. The whole idea started last year when my mom asked me to paint a few basic diyas to gift her friends. They had come out quite well and I wanted to try some more things.

I had bought 5 kinds of diyas- basic clay diyas in 2 sizes, basic terracota diyas, the decorative ones and 2 slightly big ones where one can use five "thiris". Oops i should have taken pictures of these before I painted them. I always wanted to blog on this...don't know how it slipped out of my mind.

I had a lot of fun doing this. I did do some in mono-color and the best part of the whole project was the trying of different color combinations. Then I decided to add one more color to them by pouring some colored wax into these ( not all of them though!).

I have added some pictures of the diyas and would like to know your opinion about them. ( If at all anyone is reading my blog....;-))
